The T90/10 was the third Lola design commissioned by Nissan following on from the previous year's T89/10 and 1985's T810 and it would be raced as the Nissan R90CP in the Japanese Sports Car Championship and as the Nissan R90CK in the World Sports Car Championship. The main difference between the two models were different rear bodywork and rear wings.

The new design was an improved version of the T89/10 employing lessons learnt from a season's hard competition in Japan and Europe. The chassis was stiffened with internal dimensions slightly reduced and wheel movement was increased whilst the gearbox now featured a one piece casing which allowed for wider venturi and it featured a semi-dry sump modification. AP Racing carbon disc brakes replaced last year's Brembo units,

It was a good year for Nissan in Japan where they won both the All Japan Sports Prototype Drivers and Constructors Championships winning three of the six rounds beating off a strong challenge from Toyota and Porsche.

It was much tougher in Europe where the Nissan Motorsport International team face strong competition notably from the Sauber Mercedes team whose C11 cars won eight of the nine rounds and the Jaguar XJR11 that took the other round. Additionally there was the Porsche 962C, the Toyota 90C-V and the Spice SE90C to deal with. At the end of the season Nissan took third in the Team Championship just four points behind Jaguar, highlights were seconds at Montreal and Mexico and thirds at Spa and Dijon.

Mention should be made of the 24 Hours of Le Mans where five Nissan Motorsport International-entered R90s took part. Qualifying saw Julian Bailey set a phenomenal pole time of 3-27.020 no less than six seconds faster than the Brun Motorsport Porsche 962C in second place, on the newly chicaned Mulsanne Straight he was timed at 203mph (327kph). This large gap was not only down to Bailey's driving skills but also because the waste-gate on his turbo jammed closed giving him an estimated 1100BHP! At the end of the race the Japanese spec R90CP of Masahiro Hasemi, Kazuyoshi Hoshino and Toshio Suzuki finished fourth and Steve Millen set the fastest lap in the NISMO R90CK.

Of the seven cars built four went to Nissan Motorsports International (NISMO) in the UK for the World Championship rounds, two went to Nisssan Performance Technology in the US and one to Nova Engineering in Japan.

Starting in 1991 Nissan began building their own designs.
