THE LOLA T88/30

Alliot and Dalmas at Monaco in the T88/30.
The F1 T87/30 commissioned by the Larrousse Calmels team had proved quite competitive for a team new to Grand Prix racing scoring well in the Jim Clark Trophy for cars with normally aspirated engines although reliability had been problematic. For 1988 Lola and the Larrousse Calmels team continued their partnership with a new car, the T88/30, designed by Eric Broadley and Chris Murphy with Hans Fouche as aerodynamicist.
The T88/30 was largely an evolution of the previous year's design with the most noticeable change being the operation of the front spring/damper units switching from pullrods to pushrods. The team continued to use the 3.5-litre Ford DFZ V8 engine connecting to a Hewland FGB gearbox. Initially there was a problem with a lack of grip at the front and testing resulted in several different solutions but the car was generally relegated to the rear end of the grid which, coupled once again with poor reliability, gave little to cheer about.
Results were largely disappointing with the best finishes being two seventh places for Yannick Dalmas and the car was well beaten by other normally aspirated cars such as Benetton, March, Williams and Tyrrell. With no Jim Clark Trophy this year and no World Championship points scored there was little for the French team and Lola to celebrate.
