THE LOLA T760
All pictures copyright Lola Heritage unless otherwise stated.
HU1 in the Lola factory, note the taped up sliding skirts.
The T760 was a full ground-effect design with venturis in the sidepods and sliding skirts whilst the suspension, front and rear, was inboard to keep the airflow unblocked. This was the early days of ground-effect technology so the designers and drivers were still trying to master this new black art. Full details of the car can be found in the Lola Press Release below and it's clear from this that the T760 uses the same chassis and suspesion configuration as the Formula 3 T770 and the Super Vee T720.
Only one car was built and sold which can't have been good news for Lola, the single chassis, HU1, went to Alo Lawler for use in the UK Hitachi Formula Atlantic Series. By 1979 the series was very much in decline following the Indylantic fiasco in 1976 Formula Atlantic disappeared for the next two years and this was an attempt to kick-start the class. However, with just ten cars arriving for the first round at Mallory Park which saw Lawler take the win in very wet conditions the omens were not good. The season did not improve with less than ten cars being common and despite the presence of drivers like Ray Mallock, David Leslie and Jim Crawford the Series was clearly on its last legs before it really started! For Lawler it was frequently a case of DNF although he did get a second, third and fourth during the year in addition to his win.
Atlantic was still popular in North America but with no Lola sales there it was not good news. It seemed that with the UK and North American series being dominated by designs like the Ralt RT1, Chevron B45 and March 79B, all non-ground effect cars, perhaps this design was seen as too complex for the Atlantic teams both in the UK and North America.
