The T192 was based on the lengthened chassis version of the T190 but with some significant changes. Most obvious was the new monocoque that increased the wheelbase by 11 inches (28 cms) and had various improvements to make it less complex, stronger and easier to work on. The roll hoop was a new design to comply with changes in SCCA safety regulations, it was taller with rearward braces attaching to the engine bay. At the rear the crossmember that the gearbox was mounted to was now a magnesium casting in place a complicated steel fabrication.
The final change was new bodywork, in place of the one-piece nose/top piece section there were now a separate nose cone and top piece which featured two flaps to access the fuel fillers removing the need to remove the bodywork to refuel the car. The remote reservoirs for the clutch and brake master cylinders were similarly accessed via a flap. Lastly the nose profile was lower for improved drag resistance.
The new design proved to be successful winning Championship races in both the UK, the USA and the Tasman series as well as numerous races in the SCCA Championship events. It was more successful than its two main rivals, the Surtees TS8 and the McLaren M18 but all three designs lost out in the number of wins to the previous year’s McLaren M10B that won as many races in the three main Championships as the other three new designs put together!
