This Lola T70 Spyder is built upon a spare, numbered chassis that was supplied to Team Surtees in October of 1967, shipped out to PAM Sportscars in Hermosa Beach, California, which was the team's base during the years that they participated in the Can Am Race Championship.

As this chassis was not used by the team in 1967, it was passed on to Lola's then agent, Carl Haas, in Chicago, along with all the T70 spares from the Surtees team in California, as they already knew that they would be using Lola T160s in 1968.

Haas had his mechanics build up SL71/49 into a complete running car in 1968 and, as the T70 was now obsolescent in front line competition, Haas used it as a "rent a ride" car for drivers in SCCA competition. When the T70 was finally made uncompetitive, even in club racing, Carl Haas sold the car to Mac McClendon in 1985 and, in 2013/14, McClendon International rebuilt the car and sold it to Toni Seiler in Switzerland.
