The Lola LC89 was known to Lola as the T89/30 and was the third F1 design Lola built for the Larrousse Calmels team, the other designs were the LC87 (T87/30), the LC88 (T88/30) both of which used the Ford Cosworth DFZ 3.5 V8 while the new LC89 used the Lamborghini V12 (see below). During the year Didier Calmels was arrested (and later convicted) for murdering his wife and the team became Equipe Larrousse.

The LC89 was designed by Chris Murphy and engineered by former Lotus F1 designer Gérard Ducarouge. The car was conventional for the time, the suspension was double wishbones front and rear with the Bilstein dampers operated by pushrods at the front and pullrods at the rear.

The Lamborghini 3512 V12 engine, designed by ex-Ferrari man, Mauro Forghieri, used a Lamborghini transverse 6-speed gearbox (also Forghieri-designed) with an AP-manufactured clutch and Lola driveshafts taking the power to the 13-inch rear wheels fitted with Goodyear tyres.

LC89 Additional Data

Initially the Lamborghini was considered heavy at 150kg, (for example the Renault engine was 140kg and the Judd 125kg) and was thought to produce over 600bhp, the Lamborghini engineers worked during the season to reduce the weight of the V12 and improve reliability, a switch from Magneti Marelli injection to Bosch improved performance.

Specs for the new engine were: LE3512 (Lamborghini Engineering 3.5 liters 12 cylinders) the 3,493 cc (213.2 cu in), 80° V12.

There was little development of the LC89 during the season, a new oil tank to improve the aerodynamics, a new front wing for Hungary, a new underbody for Spa and a smaller rear wing at Monza which may have been an indication that the team’s budget was limited.

There were indications during the year that the car was a competitive package with Alliot qualifying in the top ten on several occasions but too many retirements saw the team only finishing in the top six once.
