The T88/40 (which was entered as a R&D 88Q) was built for the Japanese Grand Champion Series which ran from 1971 to 1989, Lola built two Mazda-powered cars for the Nova company in Japan for the 1988 season. No wins were taken in a season dominated by Geoff Lees in a MCS 8-Mugen with Eje Elgh, Maurizio Sala and Taku Akaike driving the pair of Mizuno-sponsored, Sundai Spilit Team-entered Lolas. The best result was a sixth for Eje Elgh at Fuji.

The photographs of the car competing in Historic events show the rear suspension employed top and bottom wishbones, a track control link and the inboard spring/damper units operated by pushrods. The Mazda rotary engine certainly sounds wonderful as this YouTube clip shows.
