THE LOLA T570

Nigel Mansell's T570 outside the Lola factory.

The T570 was another effort by Lola to enter the potentially lucrative Formula Three market which, in 1977, was dominated by March, Chevron and Ralt. Following on from 1975's very disappointing T350 the T570 was a conventional design featuring outboard suspension all-round with a pair of wishbones at the front and a single top link/lower twin parallel links and twin radius rods at the rear, all attached to a conventional monocoque.

The 1977 F3 season, in both the UK and Europe, was not only packed with competitive cars, as mentioned above, but also some very good drivers: Derek Warwick, Didier Pironi, Derek Daly, Elio de Angeles, Stefan Johansson, Stephen South, Geoff Lees, Geoff Brabham, and Nelson Piquet to name just a few so, it would not be an easy task to come up with a race winning design.

Former Formula One driver Ian Ashley was recruited to drive the new car, Ashley had raced for Token, Frank Williams, Stanley BRM and Hesketh in F1 until his career was ended by a serious crash in the Hesketh 308E at Mosport Park Canadian GP in 1977. At the start 1976 he was left high and dry after Stanley BRM quit F1 and he got a job as a test-driver for Lola and one of his jobs was to work on the T570.

The download available below of the T570's test sessions shows the amount of work carried out on the design to make it competitive but it was never quite on the pace and Ashley, despite numerous race entries, only competed in eight races with a best result of 7th at Cadwell Park. At the end of the year an up-and-coming Nigel Mansell did four races taking 4th at Cadwell Park in a B.R.D.C. Vandervell British Formula 3 Championship round. Other than these brief flashes of promise the T570 was another less than successful Lola Formula Three design.
