By 1970 the Formula Ford 1600 was burgeoning in the UK and the USA and there were numerous manufacturers producing cars, Dulon, Elden, Hawke, Lotus, Merlyn and Royale to name just a few. Lola decided this was a potentially lucrative market so the T200 became their first Formula Ford design.
The strict regulations governing Formula Ford meant there was little room for innovation in the design, the spaceframe chassis was built from square section tubing, suspension was outboard all round with wishbones at the front and a top link, reversed lower wishbone and twin radius rods at the rear. The package was completed with the standard blueprinted Ford engine and a four-speed Hewland gearbox. The only departures from other manufacturer designs was a shorter than usual wheelbase and a wider track.
Initially drivers found the short wheelbase made the car "darty" but development of the set-up soon turned it into a competitive proposition and wins soon followed. Of the 64 cars built 44 of them went to the United States where it proved a popular choice and a car shipped to South Africa was driven by a young Jody Scheckter and, in the UK, the Daily Express newspaper offered a T200 as a prize in their Crusaders Championship, a series of races for pupils at a racing school, and the car was won by future F1 star Tom Pryce.
