For the 1970 Can-Am Series Lola took a leaf out of McLaren's book and offered their customers a car based on the previous year's T164 while running a new design, the T220 as their works car.
The T165 was, unsurprisingly, not in great demand following the performance of the entire T160 series over the previous seasons and only three were built. Visually it was similar to the T164 although without the high rear wing and the rear bodywork once again enclosed the back of the suspension/gearbox. The front suspension had revised pick-up points and modified wishbones to change the geometry in comparison to the T163.
The T165 was the most disappointing of the T160 series in terms of results with a 10th its best finish in the handful of races it ran in, maybe things would have been better if one of the top Can-Am teams had run a car.
