LOLA T70 ASTON MARTIN MAKES SPECTACULAR RETURN

The Goodwood media day reverberated to the thundering sound of a very rare Aston Martin V8 powered Lola T70 last Thursday.

42 years after it raced at the Nurbürgring 1000kms and Le Mans, the majestic V8 powered Lola T70 Mk3 proved to be a hot topic of conversation at the annual Goodwood Festival launch.

Driven in period by John Surtees and David Hobbs, the Mk3 Lola T70 endured a troubled Le Mans in 1967 but won the affection of the British public as the two iconic British brands came together for a unique assault on the world’s toughest motor race.

Following Le Mans, this chassis – T73 SL121 was converted to Chevrolet power and raced throughout 1968 under the Jackie Epstein banner with Epstein, Eric Liddell and Ed Nelson sharing driving duties.

The car was later acquired by Mike De Udy and raced in British national sportscar events. Now thousands at the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed will enjoy this unique car restored to its original splendour by Chris Fox. Driven at the Media event by Charlie Kemp, the Lola behaved perfectly on its maiden outing.

Hosted by Lord March last Thursday’s preview event was an exciting glimpse of what will be appearing at the 17th Festival of Speed. The theme of the 2009 Festival is 'True Grit - Epic Feats of Endurance'- a theme that celebrates the drive and determination of motor racing's heroes who overcame huge physical, mental and mechanical barriers in their quest for glory.

The Festival will take place from Friday 3rd July until Sunday 5th July.
