LOLA RECORD BREAKER

Disabled driver David Edwards has set new UK records for the 1 mile standing start and the 500m flying start for Class A (over 8,000cc) cars. David was using his 1971 CanAm T222 and on the 17th September 2008 at Wethersfield MOD the two new records were claimed. The 1 mile record had been held since 1933 when John Cobb set a time of 35.120s (102.50mph/164.950kmh) at Brooklands, David lowered the time to 33.935s (106.08mph/170.72kmh). This was the first time a record for the 500m flying start had been set in the UK.

The mighty T222 which has been adapted by the team at Scott Racing Services Ltd of Bury St. Edmunds (www.scottrace.com) and Dr. John Davis to David's particular requirements, show that modern technology can be employed to the benefit of disabled drivers both now and in the future. In addition to developing the Lola over the past four years David, who has been a wheelchair-user since 1993, has also regularly raced a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 and currently holds an International “C” race licence.

Prominently displayed on the T222 is the name Aspire a national charity that works with people with spinal cord injuries, helping them to live more fulfilled and independent lives. Part of David's purpose in setting these new records was to publicise the work that Aspire is doing as well as to raise funds to help them continue with their work.
