Lola 290 Mazda Grand Champion car

Postby driftwood » Thu Aug 31, 2006 2:38 pm

This is the car in 1972 with Mitsubishi engine

The car is Lola T290 in its original factory spec 2 cars raced with Mitsi motor most had Ford Cosworth FVC or Chevy vega engines
The crash in 1973 on the Fuji High speed banking and a driver was killed in this shunt my car was damaged and sold to the next owner with the damage

This is the Lola in 1974 and 75 in different livery now it is running with Mazda 12a motor i believe 1 other lola ran 1 or 2 races with Mazda
the March 73/74S cars ran Mazda motors

I bought the car so i may as well rebuild it with the motor it ran to me its history is in this format however in the racing world the purists will want to run it with Cosworth engine and original bodywork

Lola built 102 290-292-294 -296/8 cars from 72 to 77 and i am looking at buying 1 of the early cars to have the "original " car spec for certain historic race series

I had placed the body in the body shape to repaint when i found the photos of the car running 73-76 in its original lola body and the car was 60% restored and too far to return to the lola spec
For instance the wheelbase is longer due to the March 74S body being added and the frames where cut off form the engine bay to locate the Lola body panels and i had re poweder coated it and fitted it so i was not turning back
Sadly the later body being fitted in 1977 is going to cause me some grief to run in Historic events- if i had the lola body fitted life would be easier

I have painted the body in Le Man mazda colours as it seemed appropriate with the shape
YOU CERTAINLY WILL NOT MISS THE CAR ON THE TRACK!!!

1 advantage of the Mazda motor is it will go 2-3 seasons between rebuilds (my BMW F2 engine is 1000 miles and £8k to rebuild and that is perhaps 1 seasons racing if you chase a championship) it should have around 300 hp same as my F2 engine which will keep up with the other Lola Chevron 2 litre race cars
lola car now in 1976 at its 1st race with the 3rd owner and the car crashing breaking his legs
i have hi resolution magazine article that will try hosting showing the car crashing from the other side of the catch fencing

car was not seen again till 1977 when it was rebuilt with this body ( yes its fugly)

This is the car in 1978 with the March 74S body fitted and it ran through till 81 racing like this and i have rebuilt th ecar with this bodywork

Later I will host some pics of the car as we stripped it out for those who are interested then i can edit the whole script so all this blurb is 1 posting

here is the car crashing in 1976 the article is from the Japanese Autosport magazine
the other article is the earlier 73 accident

This is certainly a very interesting car. The Maxda engine has the reputation of bein good bang for buck.

As you are clearly a man with finger on pulse i wonder if I could piuck your branis. I have been looking for a 290 or 292 for some tome now and wonder if you would give me some pointers? Bearing in mind that relatively speaking they made a bunch of these there seem to be remarkably few around (and none on the market). the last one i saw sold was the shiny ex-Edwards car for about $140K.

thoughts would be appreciated.
