1978 Lola 492

Postby Gmoran » Mon Nov 09, 2009 3:49 pm

I am attempting to restore a 1978 Lola 492 and keep it as original as possible. Where can I find a parts list or car layout diagram? It's been in the weather for 10+ years and most everything needs replacing. I need diagrams of all the lines and whatnot.

I have several factory drawings of the water, fuel, oil layouts I can send (big files so sent one by one)

For a look at original cars go to the Archive then Sports 2000 section of
www.race-cars.com

About 7 cars there to study.

For local UK enthusiasts go to the S2000 web site. Lots of people, but not very forthcoming with info.

There is surprisingly little info on these cars, so all the pictures are invaluable.

Good luck as I know what you are about to go through and mine is far from original!

Graham.

Carl Haas in Chicago Ill has the diagrams for the T640. I would think they have them for this car too.

Here is their website link:

I have been conversing with a fellow there named Greg. His email address is

haasautogw@aol.com

Good luck.

They always seem quite busy. Sometimes their response time to a request like this could take a week or so.

You sure need a grit blaster!

That rear firewall looks the hardest bit to me.

Great original car. Will follow your thread with great interest.
Almost all the brakes are Ford Cortina/Taunus and easy to get in the UK, but maybe tricky in the USA.

Yeah, it's sat in the weather for nearly 10 years, maybe more. Enough time to eat through the headers completely. Luckily I have an enclosed sandblasting rig along with an outside rig + coolsuit so I can blast all I want. I plan on keeping everything original but maybe clear coating the block with a ceramic hi-temp coating to keep anything from rusting over again.

Did any of you guys repace the fuel bladder? I am thinking of fabbing up my own aluminum fuel cell for this.

Also, the aluminum body appears to be riveted on with aircraft rivets, how would you guys suggest removing those? And is there a frame under the aluminum body, or is it a uni-body?

Hey guys, is the 492 a unibody or is there a steel frame up under all the aluminum paneling? I am about to start removing the pieces that need to be worked on. I think they are aircraft rivets as well. Any advice to drilling those out? Just punch the center to get a good start on it and then drill it out from the top?

Also, I saw that another member here has a 492 with a ford DOHC engine in it. Is that the Zetec or the Duratec or is it some crate motor?

BTW, I sent you a PM with my e-mail address graham.

Yes, got your email address and sent you a stack of diagrams, BUT my 'sent' trays shows nothing sent!
Will send again to you tonight.

Here is my tub stripped. The rivits drill-out as you say. Lola used aircraft quality rivits everywhere which are easy to buy. I simply used new where I needed some , snipped them to legth and peened them over by hand. Came out a treat!
Look only at the base of the tub/bulkhead; the rest are my mods to get my 911 engine in.(bloody tight fit.)

The bulkhead is 2 panels separated by about 3'' and the rear tubes are welded to both on my car.
