New Lola owner (T 492) but needing some help!

Postby 911hillclimber » Wed May 21, 2008 8:41 pm

Will be getting my T 492 with F2 suspension and a few other 'deviations' soon, BUT:
I'm told this car last raced with a Karmann Ghia body on it with a 500 bhp something in the back in Thundersports/Silhouette specials some time ago.
Does this strike a chord with anyone, and anyone have any info?

It now has a new 492 2 piece body, and will be a hillclimb car during the next 18 months.

Any information please?

Graham.

Seems possible the car was one of 'Doc' Dr David Enderby's cars.
Does that ring a bell?

Here is the chassis today:

Seems (based on info from someone who really knows these early cars) that the car might have started as a 490, and not a 492.
The 490 had a front rad, the 492 a rear pod mounted rad and the dash/roll bar is different.

He says Lola made about the first 10 cars this way then switching to 492 spec.
You learn something every day.

A lot has happened in a few weeks!

The facts so far, and a question at the end:

The car IS a Lola T 492.
In 1985/6 it was stripped and rebuilt for Alan Hunberston with a fibre glass Karmann Ghia body in bright Pink with a black stripe down it and a BDG engine with FT Hewland 200 box.

It never raced, but was stored in an attic in Kent (ish)

So, who sold it to Alan?

Full update.

Thanks to several real experts on Ten Tenths over the last 4 months or so I think I have the full history of my T490.
I post this on here incase there are others who might add anything to the details no already known.

'We' think the car is a T490 HU #6 bought in Jan 77 by Ted Toleman
Ted raced it for 3 years with himslf, and others like Daly before going to F2 and F1 fame with the Toleman formula cars.

Ted sold the car to Tony Dickinson who promptly placed a Skoda body on it for Super Saloon racing. It was Tony's 3rd Skoda shot and was sucessful. His 1st and 2nd Skodas were on a Lola chassis too.

Tony sold the car to Harry humberstone who had John Schenieder/Tony Harman add a Karmann Ghia body in pink/black stipeand wing to the tub.
This took a year to do.
Alan Humberstone raced the Ghia once or twice having a crunch at Lydden Hill which finished the car off (by all accounts)

The wreck was sold to Brian at Autoquip who started a rebuild keeping the shattered Ghia body but lost heart. It now had a Sieera Cossie engine/FT 200.

The lot was sold to Mike in 2002 who fancied the car as a sprint hillclimb car and scrapped the shell and did several Lola based mods to the tub, keeping the Cossie/FT200

I bought the car from Mike in 2008 and it looks like this so far. I think the Porsche engine is the cars 6th motor.
The car is destined for hillclimbing.

If anyone has anything to add to this colourful tale, please post on here unless 'sensitive'!

Thanks for that. Not exactly a pure Lola but with 250 lbft torque in about 500Kg it should be nippy.. 8)

Porsche flat 6, 3200cc.

Bit of an up-date:
About 3 weeks from firing it up!

Incidentally, I still have not found out who sold a T 492 Sports Racer in the mid 80's to Alan or his dad Harry to rebuild the car. This donar car could have been lightly shunted on the divers side.

Any ideas would be welcome!

A lot has happened in the garage over the last few months, but the Lola Porsche is now all done and ready to test and then compete next weekend.
Thought I would share some images with you:

Pics from yesterday's track test (private) so spent 3 hours sorting a few things...
Nothing is perfect!

These are great cars to drive i assure anyone, especially with 230 bhp and same torque.

that looks suspiciously like Curbrough at a guess! 8)
have you tried Bruntingthorpe yet for testing, not bad as long as the car isnt too loud. £150+vat for 4 hrs.

Yep, Curb course. Nice and local to me, £150/3 hours all to myself, and worth EVERY penny.

Raced at Loton Park hillclimb today.

Quite a day...

Loton Park hillclimb, first race for the Lola Porsche and me.
Car now 'christened' the PO-LO  :D

Several things came out of this, but I continue to learn the car.
