Thinking of making Hewland LG500/600 ring and pinion gears

Postby David Pozzi » Tue Oct 02, 2007 5:56 pm

Any interest in brand new Hewland LG500/600 ring and pinion gear sets?
I am considering making a batch, and of stronger material than original. Hopefully cost would be less if a large batch were made.

Let me know if you would be interested in a 4 speed or 5 speed version, and how many.

Also I am lining up sources for all the bearings used. I may offer a complete bearing kit if there is enough interest.

Hi David,
Would the cost be less than what is available now ?

Yes, they would be much cheaper, if not, I won't go forward with it. I have not received pricing yet.

I do need to find out what percentage of 4 speed vs 5 speed gearsets to make.

I am also putting together a complete bearing package for the LG500/600

Please, I need some feedback from the members here.

Attention Moderators: If this post is against forum policy I'll edit or remove it.

I understand Hewland LG Crown Wheel and Pinion gear sets for the 5 speed are around $4500 US, and a 4 speed set is $1800 US.

Would you be interested in a 5 speed set made of 9310 steel, an upgrade from the 8620 the originals were made of - with proper heat treat and quality control, and $1000 cheaper?

I need member input to estimate how many I'd sell to determine the first batch size. This will affect the price.

So far, with no other response to this post, it doesn't seem worth my doing it.

David, have you spoken to the vintage race prep shops and restoration specialists that use these? There are quite a few and they typically would be the ones looking for them. There are several in California and Washington as well as many on the east coast. When I had my LG500 gone through I needed one and John Collins sourced it out. I would think that unless the car owners here do there own work, the need is driven by the shops.

Nick,
Yes it seems that way. Once I get some final pricing I'll contact some of the shops.

Hey Johan, there is an LG 500 diff on ebay right now if you need one. I don't need any more parts at the moment. In fact I may not need any more if the fires get any closer here in San Diego. I had to evacuate the house this morning and the Lola is in the garage!
