The New And Improved Lola Quiz

Postby Gerald Swan » Sat Jan 27, 2007 11:43 am

I'm going to try and start a semi-regular Quiz on the Forum which will last as long as I've got some suitable pictures :).

To get you started try these three.

Who, What, Where?

Who, What and Where? (there's a bonus point for anyone who names the gentleman on the left.)

Who and What's the significance of the three together?

First picture was probably taken at the Galveston Municipal
Airport circuit on July 11th 1965 and shows Walt Hansgen
driving the Mecom Lola-Traco-Chevrolet T70. DNF.

That's three points to Anders :D.

In fact I guess he gets a bonus point for the date which I hadn't checked on.

So that's one down, here's a replacement.

Who, What, Where and What's the significance?

The second photo has, of course, Al Unser, Sr. seated in the car. I believe the person on the left, as we view the picture, is Lloyd Ruby and the person on the right is George Bignotti.

In the third photo of the first group, is that Mike Spence on the left talking with Eric Broadley?

I'd say that in the 3rd pic it's definately a Vauxhall Victor FB, maybe a VX4/90 model..

Hmm a bit of a flurry going on :D.

Robin, you are correct with Al Unser Snr. and George Bignotti at Indianapolis but wrong about the person on the left. To be honest I would be very surprised if anybody recognised him but he does have a very close link to the car. I'm surprised nobody has recognised the guy in the centre. It's not Mike Spence, at least I hope it's not but allowing for the purpose this photo was used for I think my identification is correct. I have to say I nearly didn't use this as I thought it was too easy but there again because I knew the use of the picture it did give me a huge clue.

Glyn, I'm not sure if you are eligible but since I didn't discuss any of these with you I suppose I could stretch a point but if anyone claims its a fix you're on your own .

Yes Darren it's certainly a Vauxhall, have you considered any sort of therapy regarding your fixation with recognising the wheel arch of a 40 year old Vauxhall? It looks like the car my old next-door neighbour had which I think was a Victor, I know it rode like a blancmange and a 100 yard journey could introduce car sickness.

This is fun....here goes...that looks like John Surtees on the left, with Eric Broadley in the middle, but not a clue on the older gentleman.

Are they at Silverstone? That looks like a pit number behind, and Broadley looks like hes got an arm-band on , probably saying "owner" or something !!??

Spot on Tom :D.

Having got those two the third shouldn't be that difficult, I think it would be in order to say he was very important in British motorsport history and his son also played a notable part.

No, it's not Charlie although I can see the way your mind is working.

OK big clues, he was a well respected driver who reached F1 and even drove a works Italian F1 car. On retirement he became a Team Manager in F1 and World Sportscars (winning Le Mans), his son was also a F1 Team Manager.

Having never seen either of the pictures previously I am going to have a go. 'The Third Man' (apologies to Harry Lime) is Duncan Hamilton and the USAC car is being driven by John Surtees who made his only appearance in Indy Car racing at the innaugural Rex Mays 300 at Riverside (1967 I think) driving a Lola T90/2

No doubt I will be shot down in flames and feel a complete prat!
