THE LOLA T140

Formula 5000 first came into being as a class in the 1968 SCCA Formula A races which comprised single-seaters from various sources but unsurprisingly it was the big American V8s, powerful, readily available and not too expensive that became the dominant force. Can-Am sportscar racing was very popular at this time with its combination of unlimited engines, top drivers and teams and, most importantly of all for the spectators, noise and spectacle so it was inevitable that the idea of something similar for single-seaters would be an attractive proposition.

The new formula attracted race organisers in the UK and Europe and F5000 was soon introduced and attracted plenty of interest. This sudden growth in the new class meant that there was a whole new market opening up for race car manufacturers and coincidentally Lola found themselves with a whole lot of T70 spare parts following a change in the Group 6 sportscar regulations by the FIA that, temporarily, meant that the T70 would not be able to race.

Lola surmised that there was a ready market for a strong, reliable and not too costly car and so the T140 was born. Perhaps surprisingly, the design employed a spaceframe chassis in a world of monocoques, but Lola felt customers would prefer something that would be easier and cheaper to repair in the event of an accident. The suspension comprised T70 parts and uprights and the addition of a V8 and a Hewland LG 600 gearbox completed the package.

10 of the initial build of 15 cars were shipped to the US and, while they only won one race, the Badger "200" at Road America, five second and four third places meant the T140 played a substantial part in the early growth of the Championship.
